Lioness Bento Box

Very Grrrrrrr, baby!

Do y’all know about Bento boxes? It’s basically a Japanese lunch box, but these days, they’re more like canvases for lunch art.

This bento box has a grilled cheese sandwich designed to look like a lioness, watching over her fruit and vegetable brood. I hate to separate her from her cubs, but this is so cute, I’d eat it!

Venison and Porcini Ragu

I’ve never had venison, but I can’t think of a better way to try it for the first time than in this ragu situation.

Kyle’s mom makes a delicious tomato-less ragu, very reminiscent of this dish, which frankly, has me all giddy inside. I really want to eat this!

Baked Apple Butter Custard

Apple Butter is one of my favorite all-time foodstuffs. When you turn it into a custard and put in a crust, then you’ve got something really special.

This is supposed to be a low-cal, low-fat recipe, but that’s neither her nor there. More importantly, I’d totes eat this. Recipe here.

Classic White Layer Cake

Pink and white were my sorority colors

When I was a kid, I loved the movie Pollyanna, starring a young Hayley Mills (pre-Saved by the Bell years). I loved Pollyanna’s spirit, I loved that she got to live with her rich aunt who took her on shopping sprees, and I loved that Endora from Bewitched made crystal dream catchers. But most of all, I loved the fair scene at the end of the movie because all the food looked so good! If you pay attention, you’ll see a large 8-layer white cake covered in a pale chocolate buttercream. That cake made a lasting impression on me. For years, it was my birthday cake of choice and my mom spent many hours baking the four layers of white cake for me and the maybe two friends I invited to share it.

This cake is exactly what my mom used to make (sans the raspberries). And I would definitely eat this.
